The purpose of cataract surgery is to remove the cloudy lens and replace it with an intraocular lens in order to restore your focus to normal and minimize your dependence on glasses. After surgery, light will be transmitted into the eye normally and the lens will help focus objects at far and/or near distances, depending on the type of lens you choose. The power of the implant will be determined by your doctor. Patients who have astigmatism however, will still require the use of glasses or in some instances, LASIK surgery, to correct their astigmatism after cataract surgery. For example, a patient who chooses a monofocal lens and has astigmatism will require bifocal glasses to correct their astigmatism and presbyopia.
