Seeing an eye doctor annually to check your vision and test for early signs of disease is important. But sometimes symptoms can occur in between visits, and this is an indication you should make a trip to the eye doctor promptly. Read on as Drs. Linda Vu, Brenda Nuyen, and Jenny Soo Hoo of Linda Vision reveal signs that indicate you should schedule an eye exam.
You constantly squint to see nearby or faraway objects.
If you find yourself squinting to read a book or newspaper, or you can’t see faraway objects as well as you used to, you probably need to see your eye doctor. A vision exam may lead to a formal diagnosis of a refractive error, or an update to your existing prescription.
You notice a decline in your night vision.
Age-related vision problems often cause problems with night vision. If it suddenly becomes difficult to read road signs in dim light, or you see halos around approaching headlights, you should book an eye exam. Your ability to see clearly when driving at night is crucial to keeping you and other drivers safe.
Your eyes feel dry or irritated all the time.
Everyone’s eyes can feel dry or fatigued after a long day in front of the computer or hours spent reading. But if you regularly experience dry, irritated eyes, you should be screened for problems by your eye doctor. An exam may confirm you have dry eye syndrome or an infection that is causing additional damage.
You’ve been diagnosed with diabetes or another serious health problem.
People with diabetes are at a higher risk of certain eye problems, including diabetic retinopathy, cataracts and macular degeneration. If you have recently been diagnosed with diabetes or another systemic health condition, you should visit your eye doctor to discuss the diagnosis and what it could mean for your ocular health.
You don’t remember your last eye exam.
If you cannot remember the last time you saw your eye doctor, it is probably time for another exam. Your doctor will perform tests to make sure your prescription for glasses or contacts is up to date, and take a look inside your eyes to look for any signs of a problem. Problems caught in their early stages are generally easier to treat with less invasive methods.
